‘Seventh Street’ Published at Visual Verse!

seventh street poem published

I love writing for new audiences so I am happy to share that my poem, Seventh Street, is published at Visual Verse!

Visual Verse is unique in that it is an ongoing monthly anthology of words. Each month brings a new photo prompt and shares the best written responses. Since I enjoy writing in response to word and photo prompts, even if the writing stays on my notebook page, I look forward to the writing challenge Visual Verse provides each month.

Lately I have been focusing on telling stories. When I first began avidly writing poetry, haikus were the easiest way for me to put down a thought while longer poems turned into scrawls of jumbled feelings.

I thought I wasted notebooks on dead writing, but I needed those unclear scrawls to help me learn to write focused feelings. I have to follow writing where it goes to discover the hidden impressions I have inside myself, tickling at crevices of my heart.

It is easy to disregard something or stop yourself from doing something because you think it is wasteful or foolish, but your immediate instincts know what you need to do and, although I do hesitate and even often find myself facing a challenge, I do not regret it when I follow my gut. I may cringe now when I flip through old notebooks, but I know the ink and paper were not wasted because I needed to let go of old ideas to make space for new ones to grow.

I invite you to read Seventh Street, my latest new idea.

I have heard

You can take your cat to

Seventh Street

And those split hairs

That reflect your sins

And those chipped claws

That hunt through your albums . . . please continue reading here and feel free to share your beautiful thoughts!

Congratulations on your poem being published! I always look forward to reading your latest work, you are so talented! I sometimes look back at some of my old writing and cringe too, but I agree that it’s just a part of the process of growing, letting go of the past, and becoming a better person/writer because of it. Thank you for sharing this! I hope you have a great weekend!

    Congratulations Jaya!
English is not my native language and it’s really hard even to understand poetry in English!
But when I read it again, again and again, there are so many beautiful things inside the poetry!
    Thank you for sharing this!

I love my notebook scrawling, it’s an important part of the process. Recently I’ve found some old notebooks, that older “wiser” me can make use of those old notes 😃
Your list is published work is surely going to grow and grow!

I don’t remember where I read this but writing is a muscle so you need to use it – never regard anything as wasted writing, think of it as warm up exercises! Congrats again on getting published at Visual Verse, another wonderful piece of writing, Jaya 🙂 Lisa x
