Two Autumn Haiku Published at Whispers and Echoes Magazine

I am delighted to share two of my haikus, Dancing and Autumn Morning, are published at Whispers and Echoes Magazine!

Dedicated to short and crisp writing, I am proud to have my writing included in this online journal collective. I am a lover of small thoughts and the little things and those feelings in words are the poems Whispers and Echoes seeks to share.

I am slow to embrace the feel of the new season, but I have come to enjoy fall. I have come to love the slow transition from summer into the next season as yellow and green leaves hang side by side on the trees and foliage begins to clog the creek that runs behind my home.

Where I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains, fall is what people come to see in my mountains. If I walk out my back door and walk through the woods, I come out on the Blue Ridge Parkway where the cars drive from overlook to overlook for splash of memory-worthy beauty.

The seasons influence my writing, yet I find myself writing of spring in fall, dreaming of summer in winter, wanting to put to words the sparkle of morning sun on snow in spring.

What I experience daily and what I remember goes into my writing. What I have and what I long for goes into my writing, which is why I write about not only the things I know but also the things I do not know and learn in doing so. Whether it be for your eyes or the world, try writing out of your comfort zone once in a while.

Dancing and Autumn Morning are safe poems since they are poems directly inspired by where I live, but also poems that contain my feeling of home. Please enjoy my dedication to fall and imagine autumn in the Blue Ridge.

Congratulations on getting two of your haikus published! Oooh at this point, I lost count on how many you’ve had published hehe. It is great that you have an amazing view of the mountains. I am jealous of places where there is actual autumn.. Where the leaves actually change colors! In LA, it still feels like summer out here. Next thing we know, it is winter lol! I really felt Autumn Morning with the west coast fires. Couldn’t tell with the cigarette smoke or ashes from the burnt land!

Congratulations Jaya! Out of the two, Dancing was probably my favourite but now that you mention it I’m not sure I can tell the difference between a cold smoke and cigarette smoke either. Is it just the smell? Do they move in different ways? I’d never really thought about it before. I love the way your poetry begs you to reconsider the things we take for granted. The subtle beauties of everyday life. 🙂

Honestly, I envy your easy access to the breathtaking beauty of fall season. I have always been a mountain person, so I could imagine your inner feelings while walking through those worlds on hills.
Coming to your two amazing pieces, no wonder they got published. I could sense your love for the seasons in both of them.

Haiku is not a dead form! I love its challenge to say something in few words.

  19. Ingrid

A beautiful write, Jaya: congratulations on your well-deserved publications! ‘The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia’ sound like a far-off wonderland to me. It sounds like you really appreciate the natural paradise in which you live, as do I here in the Slovenian alps.

    1. Jaya Avendel

No matter where we live, Ingrid, there is pure delight all around us!

      1. Ingrid

That is a very good point, Jaya – sometimes we just need to remind ourselves of this truth!

  20. Lisa's Notebook

Ah, congratulations again, Jaya. I do love your haikus, it always amazes me how you can pack so much meaning into so few lines (I know that’s the point of haikus but still!). Both are beautiful, I can’t pick a favourite 🙂

That is amazing news!!! Massive congratulations on being published in Whispers and Echoes Magazine!!
Fall is personally my favorite season, I just love how the weather is just right, and the color turning for the leaves from summer. I think hiking/exploring is definitely a fall activity, the weather isn’t too hot to need like 5 water bottles, but is just right to continue on the path.
Your poem Dancing just painted the picture in my mind of a ballet dancer dancing in the rain with autumn leaves around, the steams curling part kind of put in my mind of it being warm enough for it to feel warm when the rain hits the ground.
Autumn Morning is super direct and to the point! Misty mornings are very much fall/autumn and it really symbolizes the change of season of being able to differentiate misty mornings vs cigarette smoke.
    Love both pieces!

Golden leaves – brings back memories of when I visited Maryland (Edgewater) sitting in a small restaurant by the water and the multicoloured Autumn leaves on the trees. Congratulations on your publication!

    1. Jaya Avendel

I love that these poems evoked a memory for you. 🙂

  25. Lindsey
