Selfish

Selfish Poem

A thousand rocks

Littered your bed

Water could not sweep them away.

Sticks and leaves blocked

Your flow

Water could not move them away.

From rock to rock

Debris moved

Refusing to whirl away.

A thousand miles of

Brushwood filled your bed

Water could not sweep them away.

Your seams split

With the floods

Roads washed away.

If only a hundred pairs of hands

Had aided your way.

Water is one of the strongest forces and not even water could stop your flow! I like it!

This is beautiful! Everything is perfect. It really touched me. Its longer than other poems you’ve written. I can literally imagine what you’re describing and I think its very beautiful.

Beautiful Jaya! It’s everyone’s responsibility to help keep things flowing smoothly to avoid disaster.
I don’t know if you meant it this way but it made me think of all the things that are going on in the US right now. Maybe that’s just what’s top of my mind. 🤷 Either way, it’s beautiful. Thank you!

I love the way you read this poem, Clarissa! I think we each put a bit of ourselves into the interpretation of something. 🙂

    Jaya,
This poem is amazing. The imagery and words you selected were perfect. I can close my eyes and envision exactly what you are describing.
It’s nice to also read in your bio that you are from VA. From one Virginian to another. <3

Great poem. Is anyone else getting the message of how important natural flood defences are for modern development or is that just me?

Very cool to see a longer poem on here. I love it as it gives me more lines to dive into. And an especially important theme during these times when we need to be working as a community.

Oooh I love the analogy of being selfish where even the waters can’t sweep the easiest things away. This is because the selfish person is keeping it all for themselves. It is hard to get help when you are known to be selfish. You need to give to receive – as things in life should be!!

I’m unsure of your intention but this piece reminded me of times where I felt alone and like I could not grasp life yet always managed to keep flowing

It is very good of you to admit to a little confusion, but thank you for sharing what you did feel!
I was trying to convey that a flood happens if no one clears the creek.
