Trapped in stepmother’s glass shoes

Bones starving in flight.

This one has left me with so many questions!! I usually get a story from your writing (whether it’s the one you intended or not) and I didn’t from this one. But it still felt really powerful. I love the last line, even though I have no idea what it means. I know writing is often left open to interpretation but I’d love to know your inspiration for this one x

I imagined Cinderella as a stepmother. In the Snow White fairytale, the stepmother is condemned by dancing herself to death in a pair of iron shoes. Combined with my view of dancing as a way to fly, this poem is my vision of a woman in happy motion trapped within herself.

Thank you so much for sharing your questions and giving me a chance to share some of my inspiration!

I have to be honest, I’m not too sure of the meaning behind the first and third lines, but the stepmother’s glass shoes seems a lovely take on the Cinderella story 🙂 And congrats on going self-hosted, your site looks lovely!

Have you gone self hosted? Your site looks a lot different to how it usually does. Your new look does look great!

For me, bronze life implies old and agile, like rust cause by corrosion and oxidation. Being trapped in the glass shoes of a stepmother also implies the fragile nature of stepping into the role of mother of someone’s else’s children. I’m not sure if this was what you were going for, but that’s where it led my thoughts

    1. Jaya Avendel

Yee! So happy you noticed; I have indeed gone self-hosted. Still working on perfecting it, but am loving it. <3

Thank you for sharing your lovely interpretation of this poem!

Oh wow! I can feel the imagery and each word, it breaks my heart. It is very delicate with the glass imagery along with that desire to run away from it all. Such clear, beautiful, and evocative feelings in this piece.
