Of the Beholder

Of the Beholder Poem

I pound my feet against the earth

Golden bangles scrap against silver

Arms thrust wide

Tears streak the dust from my face.

You capture my freedom in

The cage of your painting but

Leave it untitled so others

May project their meaning

Into your colors.

Ohh, love the idea that she may aware of her existence but stuck within a painting with no way out. People judging and looking, projecting their ideas onto her but never seeing her as is.
Thanks for sharing this powerful poem!

Personally I always find shades of my colors into your words because you are able to describe sensation that I feel mine as well.
But your colors are the special ones and make the difference!

I adore that second half. Reminds me of a girl moulding herself into the ideals of others.

Using the self, to make the possibilities of others, a reality, this is, the ultimate, kind of, selfless, giving…

    ‘You capture my freedom in
    The cage of your painting’
    – that’s how I feel about photography too. I hate being photographed. And others add their interpretations to art in the same way they do to poetry. So well-observed!

Loving your comparison of this piece to being photographed! Thank you, Ingrid.

Many thoughts evoked from your poem, Jaya. First, I love the visual of tears streaking dust on a face. Your poem also reminded me of the book, The Portrait of Dorian Gray, specifically the first two lines of the second stanza. Enjoyable read!

This piece brings to mind how an artist interprets what they feel and see in a portrait

WOW, this feels so profound in my bones. It’s chilling especially this:
    “You capture my freedom in
The cage of your painting but
    Leave it untitled so others
    May project their meaning”
Beautiful verse. It’s evocative to me.
