Book Review: Whistler of Petty Crimes by Eileen Ike West

Whistler of Petty Crimes Book Review

I recently had the pleasure of reading Eileen Ike West’s debut poetry collection, Whistler of Petty Crimes, and am delighted to share a book review of this transportive poetic narrative.

The poems in this book are not short as each one imparts a story that plays into the narrative of the author’s life from childhood to adulthood. The poetic landscapes are rich with emotion and imagery and the writing alive with a sense of lives lived.

Whistler of Petty Crimes Book Review

Whistler of Petty Crimes begins with reflections rooted in childhood and explores the conflicts and realities that make up homes and both trap people within and drive people away. The opening stanzas touch on a sense of wanderlust inspired by feelings of stagnation and a longing to “let the spirit flow/teether it not/be the rushing river/not the solid rock.”

Specific memories of grandparents, parents, and siblings find their way into poems that resonate with the emotions and reflections that come with growing up as the author writes of leaving for college and learning that “Parental prejudices/come in various shapes/and sizes/some in the shape/of dark circles in blonde wood.”

Take the journey of a lifetime through the vignettes and memories threaded through the poetry of this collection that lend the poems profound lessons waiting for the reader to discover.

I invite you to enjoy Whistler of Petty Crimes as it spins its reflective landscapes and imparts lessons learned by life lived. I recommend Whistler of Petty Crimes to the reader who loves chasing a poem word by word in search of wisdom and self-discovery and to all lovers of poetry. It is a unique and learned collection ready to be enjoyed at all of life’s stages.
