Winter Promises

Winter Promises Sonnet

In comparing you to a frosty night

I find you nibble my fingers and lips

As the jack o’ lantern sheds its pale light

You warm my blood with your velveteen nips.

Silver buckled shoe and dainty stocking

Aqua and gold stripes make up your disguise

Cut against the stars, your voice is mocking

Your vibrant eyes reveal feminine lies.

I have loved you since before I was born

I saw first your face in the mirrored moon

Your tears: the dewdrops I collect each morn

Saucy love, we will be together soon.

Under lamplight I meet you each autumn

Your faithless heart I will forever strum.

Inspired by the Experiments In Fiction Halloween Sonnet Sunday, Winter Promises is the first sonnet I have written. I am proud to have stepped away from what I know to write something new and suspect I will write further sonnets in the future.

The event officially launches on the 31st, but I am sharing my contribution here a couple days early; hence, if you feel inspired to write a sonnet, may the words flow!

Seeing ‘faces in the mirrored moon’, is something that brings memories of places I have been and thoughts of the steadfast vision always there to remind me to go on.

I love the visuals you have created, Jaya. A hint of Halloween but a nontraditional Halloween poem. Halloween props in the background that help set the tone. Wonderfully creative. 🎃

May the words flow strong and bold. I liked!! How you embrace winter and then smack it with the fiery light and stand out with vibrant clothes against the winter chill. Keep them flowing. Xx

Yet another great edition to your growing collection of poems. I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting “velveteen nips”, I was expecting that to be lips. I especially like the part about the jack o’ lantern and it’s pale light

Love that I was able to surprise ya!
